☝ Sensual Objects mentioned in Triangulation Blog

http://www.triangulationblog.com/2011/11/sensual-objects.html

M.O.O.N. (Multi-local Object Orientated Network) was an open communication infrastructure, comprised of several two-way communication points, concealed behind various objects, and positoned around Cork city in such a way as to aerially map a triangle, that all received and transmitted sound to and from all the other communication points. In addition to the possible physical engagement of the network at their individual fixed local contexts, the network could also be accessed from calling an advertised phone number, granting engagment from potentially any location in the world.

The physical system was loosely based on the architechture of mesh networks, and somewhat resembled a two-way public address system, but by utilising the free communication software skype as the networks backbone, any utopian affinities were quickly stuttered or sometimes completely disrupted through the invisible and unpredictible interference of communicative artifacts from unknown origins.

latest project:

Chris Timms presents M.O.O.N (Multi-local Object Orientated Network), a open communication mesh network based around Cork city centre. The network is comprised of four interconnected points, each with a two-way audio communication device installed, that enables the public audience to listen to sound from and speak to the three other points. The devices are hidden from view within objects located in public sites, enabling chance relationships to emerge with these objects, such as remote conversations with strangers, and eavesdropping ambient noise from non-local sites. In addition to each public communication point, a phone number (021 234 8599) is availible to grant potentially global access to the network.

Examples of the communication nodes will be presented at the dual opening launch on Friday 22nd. The network will go live at The Guesthouse at 6pm with a drinks reception and, following a short walk to another host location, a launch event will take place in The Black Mariah at 7.30. A map with all the communication points listed will be availible at the opening, when people will be encouraged to engage with the devices, or alternatively can be accessed at http://www.corkmoon.com.

M.O.O.N. is a project undertaken during a three month collaborative residency in the Guesthouse, Cork, with Carl Giffney and Elaine Reynolds, under the collaborative moniker Bulwark Special. Chris Timms would like the thank all involved at the Guesthouse, The Black Mariah, the Cork Artists Collective and Crawford College of Art and Design @ Sullivans Quay.
